All eight Discovery Trail sites conduct annual field trips for ICSD elementary school students in pre-K to fifth grade. While each Discovery Trail site has a specific focus and curriculum the overall goals are the same.

The field trip helps to:

  • enhance school experience through curriculum-based learning
  • provide equal access to all Discovery Trail sites
  • promote understanding and respect among students from different neighborhoods
  • expand community awareness of the resources of the Discovery Trail

Here are some thoughts and resources from different Discovery Trail sites:

Johnson Museum of Art - We have tried to add one or two new resources to the program every year. Working with everything from leftover postcards and posters to materials from previous family programs we have tried yearly experiments with classroom materials. In the past we have made matching memory cards, a matching game with the painting Fields in the Month of June and books about shapes that can be found in the Museum. This year we will introduce the Shapes in the Museum book and do a second tour about shapes in architecture with some of the pre-K classes. This in turn sparked the idea of a book about shapes in each of the 8 schools.

Lab of Ornithology - here is the habitat booklet used with students: Habitat Booklet

Museum of the Earth - here are examples of 3 handouts (teacher resource 15 dino facts museum detective worksheet , and Continue Learning About Dinosaurs and other Fossils!

TCPL - Children receive a "Library Discovery Booklet" which they use as a type of passport during their "Library Discovery Time."
